DEEP PORTAGE UPDATE
April 18th, 2019
We were informed late Wednesday afternoon that Deep Portage did not have us scheduled to be coming there next week with our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Instead, they have booked another school in our place. Unfortunately, they do not have any space for us for the rest of the year.
This is entirely Deep Portage’s mistake. The director has admitted that they made the mistake. Mr. Weisz had met with him the last time we were there, and booked these dates. Somehow, they did not get us on their schedule.
We are very disappointed, as we have been going to Deep Portage for many years and have developed a good relationship with them. We really hate to notify you that we will not be able to go there this year, as we know the students have all been looking forward to it, and many parents have taken off work to act as chaperones.
We contacted Long Lake Conservation Camp in Aitkin County, which is 76 miles away, and they have an opening for us May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. The downside of these dates is they are the last three days of the school year. After discussing it with the teachers, we have decided to go to Long Lake on those dates.
So, we will not be going to Deep Portage on April 24th, 25th, and 26th, but will be going to Long Lake on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
This means we need to make some other changes to the end of the year activities. The elementary track meet for grades 3-6 will be on Monday, May 20th, with Tuesday, May 21st, as a back-up day in case of rain on Monday, May 20th. If we get the track meet in on Monday, May 20th, we will have the softball games on Tuesday, May 21st. The elementary awards will be on Tuesday, May 21st, starting at about 1:30 pm with the track and field awards.
We apologize for this short notice, and change of plans, but it is not our fault. It is totally Deep Portage’s mistake and their fault. We are fortunate to have found an alternative for our students on such short notice.
As for parents who have agreed to chaperone, we feel really bad for you, especially if you have taken off work next week to go to Deep Portage. If you are interested and able to go with us to Long Lake in May, we would welcome you to do so, but would totally understand if you cannot make it on those days.
Again, we apologize for having to make these changes, but due to Deep Portage’s mistake, we felt we owed it to our students to try to find something else for them.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Mr. Harthan and Grade 4-6 Teachers
